Household budgeting tips

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Turn off your computer at night, and unplug appliances and phone rechargers that aren't used every day.  They continue to draw electricity even when not in use.
  • Cover pots when stovetop cooking. It takes much less energy to cook if the pot is covered.
  • Plan meals for the week or month and shop once for the necessary items. Stick to your list.
  • Instead of national name brands, buy no-name or store brands.
  • Join a shopping club so you can save on brand names and dining out.
  • Buy "on special" meats.  These are still fine, just nearing their expiry date.  As long as you use them or freeze them right away, you'll save big!
  • Use coupons and shop on extra saving days.
  • Calculate if that jumbo size of tomato juice really is the best deal.  Buying in bulk isn't always cheaper.
  • Don't shop for groceries when hungry.
  • Learn to cook simple meals.  Prepackaged meals are very expensive, and less healthy for you and your family.
  • Walk short distances, instead of driving there.  You'll save money and get healthier too!
  • Don't let water run unnecessarily.
  • Keep a jug of water in the refrigerator.  You'll have cold water on hand and won't have to run the tap to get a cold drink.
  • Check on prescription drugs to make sure using your health plan saves you money.
  • Do laundry in cold water, and only wash full loads.
  • Sell your kids' outgrown clothes and toys at a consignment shop. (I made a pile of cash doing this!)
  • Shop garage sales.
  • Borrow DVDs, audio tapes and books from your local library - it's free!
  • Attend free concerts in your community, or support your local high school theater group.
  • Volunteering to usher at your local performing arts center will let you see the shows for free.
