They continue to draw electricity even when not in use. Cover pots when stovetop cooking. It takes much less energy to cook if the pot is covered. Plan meals for the week or month and shop once for the necessary items. Stick to your list. Instead of national name brands, buy no-name or store brands. Join a shopping club so you can save on brand names and dining out.Buy "on special" meats. These are still fine, just nearing their expiry date. As long as you use them or freeze them right away, you'll save big! Use coupons and shop on extra saving days. Calculate if that jumbo size of tomato juice really is the best deal. Buying in bulk isn't always cheaper. Don't shop for groceries when hungry. Learn to cook simple meals. Prepackaged meals are very expensive, and less healthy for you and your family. Walk short distances, instead of driving there. You'll save money and get healthier too! Don't let water run unnecessarily. Keep a jug of water in the refrigerator. You'll have cold water on hand and won't have to run the tap to get a cold drink. Check on prescription drugs to make sure using your health plan saves you money. Do laundry in cold water, and only wash full loads. Sell your kids' outgrown clothes and toys at a consignment shop. (I made a pile of cash doing this!) Shop garage sales. Borrow DVDs, audio tapes and books from your local library - it's free! Attend free concerts in your community, or support your local high school theater group. Volunteering to usher at your local performing arts center will let you see the shows for free.
